Tigard’s History and Why We’re Proud to Serve the Tigard Community
Prior to European settlement, the Tualatin Valley was home to the Atfalati (Tualatin) band of the Kalapuya people. They built villages near present‑day Tigard, burned the valley floor to encourage camas growth, and spoke the Tualatin‑Yamhill Kalapuyan language. Diseases in the early 1800s reduced their population dramatically, paving the way for Euro‑American settlers.
Under the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, families like the Tigards homesteaded the area. Wilson M. Tigard’s family arrived in 1852, built a school and general store, and renamed East Butte “Tigardville” in 1886. The Oregon Electric Railway reached the community in 1910, spurring growth and reorienting the town toward the rail stop.
By 1961 the town incorporated as the City of Tigard. Main Street blossomed with commercial buildings, and electricity and telephone service arrived early in the 20th century. Tigard has since grown into a suburban city with shopping centers and residential neighborhoods.
Today Tigard has about 54,500 residents and is part of the Portland metro area’s economic fabric. We’re proud to provide reliable plumbing services to this community, from historic Fanno Creek to the modern Bridgeport Village.
