Algona’s History and Why We’re Proud to Serve the Algona Community
Algona is a city in King County, WA, that’s nestled in the heart of the Green River Valley. Originally known as ”Valley City” the area attracted homestead settlers in the 1870s and 1880s primarily due to its arable land. The arrival of the Seattle-Tacoma Interurban Railway in 1902 fueled the area’s growth even further, attracting more settlers.
The area’s name was changed from Valley City to Algona in 1909. This was done to avoid confusion with a similarly named post office in eastern Washington. While the origin of the area’s name is contentious, the consensus is that community members initially proposed the name ”Algoma,” and an Indian word meaning ”Valley of Flowers.” However, due to a slight misspelling by postal officials, the name was approved as ”Algona” and it stuck.
Algona was officially incorporated as a city in August 1955 with an estimated population of about 1,800 at the time of incorporation. Since its incorporation, Algona’s population growth has remained relatively low, growing to 3,290 as of the 2020 census. This has enabled the city to retain its small-town feel and strong sense of community.
Just as Algona has evolved over the years while retaining its small-town charm, at Fast Plumbing and Drain, we are dedicated to providing Algona residents with plumbing solutions that respect the area’s heritage while embracing modern technologies.
