Burien’s History and Your Home’s Evolution
Burien is one of Washington’s most recently incorporated cities. While many settlers arrived in the area in the 1870s and 1880s, Burien was incorporated in 1993. This was after four previous attempts to incorporate had failed.
However, due to concerns about the creation of a third runway at Sea-Tac Airport and the proliferation of multi-family apartments and dwellings in the area, residents eventually voted to incorporate the city to prevent unchecked growth.
The new city derived its name from Lake Burien, named after pioneer settler Gottlieb Burian, who built a cabin near the lake. The name was misspelled over the years, and the name Burien stuck.
At incorporation, Burien had a population of about 27,700 residents, and as of the 2020 census, the population spiked to 56,066, making it one of Washington’s fastest-growing cities.
