Granite Falls is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, with a storied history. Initially, the area was a portage center for Coast Salish people and early settlers. Then, in 1883, the first permanent settler, Joseph Sousa Enas, arrived. He was later followed by other settlers in the late 19th century who were drawn by a large burn area that made creating homesteads easier without the physically demanding task of clearing trees.
In its early days, Granite Falls thrived as a logging town with many shingle mills established in the area, including Best Shingle Company, Chappell Shingle Company, and the Starr Logging Company.
Mining was another key industry in Granite Falls, promoted by the discovery of gold, silver, and copper in nearby mining districts. These industries fueled the area’s growth, and Granite Falls was officially incorporated in 1903.
While the logging and mining industries thrived throughout the early 1900s, the onset of the Great Depression significantly impacted these industries, particularly the logging industry. Many shingle mills closed, and the town’s population dropped by nearly half between 1925 and 1935.
However, Granite Falls reinvented itself over the years, and it has become a popular tourist destination, particularly since the scenic Mountain Loop Highway that provides access to various beautiful outdoor recreation sites begins in the city.
