The Rich History of Index and Why We’re Proud to Serve Index Residents
Index is a town in Snohomish County, WA, with a storied history. The town was established in 1893 by Amos and Persis Gunn, who platted the townsite amid a boom in mineral exploration in the area and the arrival of the Great Northern Railway.
Initially, Index grew as a mining, logging, and recreation hub, capitalizing on its location along the railway and proximity to the Monte Cristo mines. By the early 20th century, Index boasted a large sawmill and granite quarries, leading to a population spike of around 1,000.
The town was eventually incorporated in 1907 and continued flourishing as a mining and logging hub throughout the early 1900s. However, economic shifts and the onset of the Great Depression led to the decline of these industries, leading to a sharp population decline and the closure of the local high school in 1942.
Yet, with the sharp population and industry decline, Index reinvented itself over the years, with recreation-based tourism becoming the dominant sector due to the area’s numerous outdoor recreational activities like rock climbing, hiking, and fishing.
Index, WA, is a resilient town that has stood the test of time despite periods of economic turbulence. Like Index, your home needs resilient plumbing systems to stand the test of time.
