Lynnwood’s Unique History and Why We’re Proud to Serve Lynnwood Residents
Lynnwood is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Initially inhabited by the Snohomish Native Americans, settlers began to arrive in the area in the 1880s, attracted by the area’s abundant cedar, hemlock, and spruce trees. These early settlers established a logging community near Scriber Lake and formed a neighborhood called Cedar Valley.
As the town steadily grew and attracted more settlers, the Seattle-Everett Traction Company built a railway line in 1910 that ran between Seattle and Everett, attracting entrepreneurs and real estate speculators to the area.
Then, seven years later, the Puget Mill Company, the largest landowner in southern Snohomish County at the time, established a planned community known as Alderwood Manor, attracting even more settlers to the area.
However, present-day Lynnwood emerged in the late 1930s around the intersection of Highway 99 and 196th Street Southwest. The area was named by a local realtor, Karl O’Beirn, who named the area after his wife, Lynn.
With a steadily growing population and new neighborhoods, businesses in Lyndwood began to thrive, leading to the establishment of the Lynnwood Commercial Club in 1946. Eventually, Lynnwood was incorporated as a city in 1959 due to the need for municipal services
