Marysville’s Storied History and Your Home’s Evolution
Marysville, WA, isn’t just another dot on the map. It’s a city steeped in history. Located in Snohomish County and about five miles away from the county seat, Everett, Marysville’s origins date back to the late 19th century.
In 1878, James Comeford and his wife Maria arrived in the area, which was then densely forested. Although the jury is still out on the origin of the town’s name, many history scholars now agree that it was derived from Maria, James’s wife.
The Comefords paved the way for many settlers to migrate to the city, and the town was platted in 1885 and officially incorporated in 1891. Initially, the logging industry fueled the town’s economy, and by 1906, Marysville had at least ten timber mills that produced more than a million board feet of lumber daily.
However, farming became increasingly important by the turn of the decade, especially strawberry farming. This led to the city earning the moniker ”the strawberry city,” and by the middle of the 20th century, strawberries became Marysville’s biggest crop.
Unfortunately, in 1955, a severe freeze wreaked havoc on many strawberry farms, and the industry never fully recovered. Yet, despite the decline in strawberry production in Marysville, the city still hosts a Strawberry Festival held annually during the third week in June.
From its humble beginnings as a logging and farming hub, Marysville has experienced substantial growth since its inception. It is now the second-largest city in Snohomish County, with a population of about 70,700 people, according to the 2020 census.
