Monroe’s Rich History and Why We’re Proud to Serve Monroe Residents
Nestled where the Skykomish and Snoqualmie rivers meet to form the Snohomish River, Monroe boasts a storied history dating back to the 19th century. Initially inhabited by Native Americans, European settlers began to arrive in the area in 1860. Henry McClurg, one of the pioneer settlers, claimed land near the confluence of the Skykomish and Snoqualmie rivers and established the settlement of Park Place four years later.
When the Great Northern Railway chose a route about a mile north of Park Place, a construction boom ensued on the outskirts of the original settlement, and most of the town relocated. After the relocation, Park Place was renamed Monroe to honor the nation’s fifth president, President James Monroe.
Monroe was eventually incorporated in 1902 with a population of 325, and selected as the home of a major condensed milk plant and the state reformatory. Monroe flourished in its early days due to its fertile land, abundant timber, and proximity to the railroad, which provided access to markets for lumber and farm produce from the area.
From its modest beginnings as a logging and agricultural hub, Monroe evolved over the years. In the late 20th century, it became a popular suburban bedroom community, serving commuters to Everett and Seattle.
