Mukilteo’s Unique History and Why We’re Proud to Serve Mukilteo Residents
Mukilteo isn’t just another dot on the map. It’s an area with a storied history dating back to the 19th century. Initially inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, the name ”Mukilteo” comes from a Snohomish word meaning ”good camping ground.” (However, some history scholars argue the name loosely translates to ”to swallow” or ”narrow passage” according to the Snohomish dialect of Lushootseed.)
It was at Mukilteo that Governor Issac Stevens met with representatives of Native American tribes to sign the Elliot Point Treaty in 1855. The treaty ceded tribal lands to the U.S. government in exchange for retention of fishing and hunting rights, relocation to reservations, and cash compensation.
This opened the area to American settlers, and two years later, Morris Frost and Jacob Fowler, two merchants from New York, established the first settlement in the area. Known initially as Point Elliot, the area was renamed Mukilteo in 1860 by Fowler.
Mukilteo served as the interim county seat of the newly established Snohomish County in 1861 and was officially incorporated in 1947. In its early days, Mukilteo’s development mirrored the growth of several other surrounding towns, primarily serving as a logging hub. However, unlike many nearby towns that became dependent on logging, the area diversified its economy by establishing a brewery and a salmon cannery plant by the 1870s.
From its modest beginnings as a logging hub with a population of 775 at incorporation, Mukilteo has experienced significant growth over the years and, as of 2020, had a population of roughly 21,500. This evolution from a small town to a vibrant commuter town means the city features various plumbing systems from Old Town Mukilteo’s old-fashioned, charming homes to Harbour Pointe’s modern homes.
At Fast Plumbing and Drain, we understand the unique history of homes in Mukilteo and the diverse plumbing challenges Mukilteo residents face. That’s why you can trust us to provide tailored plumbing solutions, no matter when your home was built.
