Back in the 1800s, Newcastle was a coal town. One of the busiest in the region by 1869, literally powering Seattle’s rise from the ground up. At one point, more people lived here than in Seattle. Let that sink in. We had rail lines, mining shafts, hundreds of homes, and a population that worked hard and played harder.
But as the coal demand died out, so did the noise. By the time the last mine closed in 1963, Newcastle felt like a ghost of its former self. Quiet, overlooked, but never forgotten by the folks who stuck around.
Then came the 1990s. Residents decided this place still had something special, and in 1994, Newcastle officially incorporated. Since then, it’s grown into one of King County’s most sought-after communities. Trails, families, Teslas, townhomes, it’s got a little bit of everything now. But beneath all that beauty? Yeah… still some pretty old bones.
